The performance Ba’alot was born out of the project Kol Tavnit that consisted of songs inspired by Canaanite motifs, written by the artist Assi Meshullam and composed by Talia Yona Kliger for an exhibition at the Bible Lands Museum, Jerusalem. The Kol Tavnit project captivated choreographer Mijal Nathan, who initiated this new collaboration.

Many modern and contemporary works have been created under the influence of ancient myths from cultures around the world. Few, however, have engaged with Canaanite mythology, from the 12th and 13th centuries BCE. The new performance by the Israel Flamenco Group seeks to bring to the stage the Canaanite spirit emanating from the tales of local goddesses, who played a central role in the divine pantheon. The performance intertwines the ancient history of the Land of Israel with the culture of flamenco—a form that many of its practitioners regard as a religion in its own right.
